Why focus on sustainable aviation and zero emissions flights?

The transport sector is falling behind on emissions reductions as demand continues to grow. Meanwhile, non-CO2 climate impacts from aviation accounts for 3.5% of global warming.

Without action to reduce flights and switch to low and zero carbon technologies, aviation will drive huge emissions growth, rather than achieving net-zero by 2050

Direct emissions from aviation account for around 3% of EU greenhouse gas emissions.

European demand for air travel is expected to grow at a rate of 2% each year. By 2040, there will be an additional 660,000 people per year taking flights in Europe.

The Challenge

  • Bio-based sustainable aviation fuels have several significant challenges. Synthetic fuels are critical to decarbonising the aviation sector. However these solutions require significant investment to achieve a net-zero aviation industry by 2050.

  • Fueling a new narrative: The dominant narratives position carbon pricing as a social justice issue and stress that technology alone can solve the problem. This has captured policymakers, disempowered the public, and diminished space for new policies and breakthrough technologies.

  • The industry is currently not on track to achieve net-zero by 2050. Future aircrafts powered by hydrogen or batteries will be essential for reaching this net-zero target. Catalytic action will be required to achieve these targets.
